Feed words
Cattle feed is dana in Telugu, theevanam in Tamil, kalitheetta in Malayalam, pashu aahar in Hindi, pashukhadya in Marathi and dan in Gujarati. Here are the feed words farmers use, in eight languages, with what each one means.
The bought feed of grains, oil cakes and bran that you give on top of fodder, mainly for milk.
TMR means Total Mixed Ration: fodder, grains, protein and minerals already mixed, so one feed does the whole job.
What is left after oil is pressed out of seeds; it is rich in protein.
Oil cake made from cotton seed, widely fed to milking animals for protein and energy.
Oil cake made from groundnut (peanut); high in protein.
The outer skin of rice or wheat left after milling; it adds energy and fibre.
Dried stalks of paddy, wheat, jowar or ragi; it fills the stomach and gives fibre, but little protein.
Fresh green grass and crops such as napier, maize or jowar, cut and fed the same day.
Green fodder such as maize, chopped and packed airtight so it keeps for months.
A powder of calcium, phosphorus, salt and trace minerals that animals need in small amounts every day.
Fat is the cream in milk; SNF (solids-not-fat) is the protein, milk sugar and minerals. Dairies test both and pay by them.
The shop or dealer where you buy cattle feed, oil cakes and supplements.
